Nari Honors Legacy: New Information Centre to Be Named After Beloved Late Governor

Nari Honors Late Governor with New Information Centre Name: “Luther Akisawa Wenge Haus”

In a heartwarming tribute to the late Governor Luther Akisawa Wenge, the National Agriculture Research Institute (Nari) has announced that it will officially name its information center the “Luther Akisawa Wenge Haus.” This significant decision was unveiled by Nari’s director-general, Dr. Nelson Simbiken, during a touching haus krai ceremony held at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium in Lae, Morobe last week.

Dr. Simbiken highlighted Wenge’s profound impact on Nari and recognized his commitment to enhancing both the visibility of the province and the critical role that agricultural research plays in the livelihood of the communities in Papua New Guinea. “Wenge was a visionary leader who anticipated the importance of Nari’s work and its direct impact on agricultural research, technology, and job creation,” he stated. He emphasized that Wenge’s support was pivotal in securing funding and advocacy for Nari’s mission.

Wenge’s legacy includes not just the naming of the information center but also the establishment of vital facilities such as the Alan Quartermain Multi-Purpose Hall and the Dr. Ghodake National Biotechnology Centre. Both names were suggested by Wenge to honor the invaluable contributions made by expatriate scientists who significantly advanced agricultural research in Morobe and throughout Papua New Guinea.

Dr. Simbiken fondly recalled that even after stepping down from office, Wenge remained a steadfast patron of Nari, never missing an open day or Agricultural Innovation Show. “The great Songan always viewed Nari as a part of the Wampar community, playing an essential role in nurturing and guiding the organization,” he remarked.

Adding to the tribute, Nari will also introduce the “Luther Wenge Research Grant” in his honor. This grant stems from Wenge’s commitment to allocate K1 million from provincial government royalties to further support scientists in their innovative pursuits within the agricultural sector.

As we celebrate Wenge’s contributions to agriculture and community development in Papua New Guinea, Nari stands as a testament to his vision of a thriving, research-driven agricultural future. For many, he will always be remembered as a champion of innovation and development who passionately believed in the transformative power of agriculture.
