Local Business Supports Chilenje Transit Home with Generous Donation!

In a heartwarming gesture that encapsulates the spirit of community and support, the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise Development in Zambia recently made a generous donation to the Chilenje Transit Home. This event was part of the nationwide celebrations marking Zambia’s 61st Independence Anniversary, and it underscored the importance of caring for the country’s most vulnerable citizens—children in need.

Subeta Mutelo, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, spoke passionately during the donation ceremony, expressing deep appreciation for the dedicated staff at Chilenje Transit Home. “We are here to show our support and appreciation for the incredible work being done to protect and empower children who have faced various challenges such as neglect, abuse, and trafficking,” she stated. This recognition highlights the critical role that such establishments play in safeguarding the well-being and future of children who have encountered difficulties in their young lives.

Founded in 1957 by an act of Parliament, Chilenje Transit Home has a rich history of not only providing shelter and education but also serving as a rehabilitation center for children in distress. The home has played a significant role in Zambia’s social fabric, particularly during the nation’s struggle for independence, when it opened its doors to children from neighboring countries involved in liberation movements. Chairperson Alice Kapilikisha spoke eloquently about this legacy, saying, “Freedom is not just about independence but also about helping others live better lives.” This sentiment resonates strongly in a region that values compassion and solidarity.

Currently, the transit home cares for 30 children and has successfully reintegrated several others with their families, thanks to ongoing court resolutions and devoted caregivers. Joel Kazongo, the Assistant Director of Human Resource Administration, also voiced his solidarity, stating, “I’m very happy we are not alone at this; the directors are committed to ensuring that we provide support through these donations.”

This event serves as a reminder that independence means more than just celebrating freedom; it’s about empowering those who need it most. As Zambia moves forward, initiatives like these foster a brighter future for children and the community as a whole.
