Temporary Closure of Marine Bridge for Urgent Maintenance: What You Need to Know

The Lagos State Government has announced a crucial maintenance initiative that will temporarily affect commuters using the Marine Bridge in Ijora, part of the Apapa Local Government Area. The maintenance works, coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Works, are expected to improve the integrity and safety of this vital infrastructure.

In an informative statement released on Thursday, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the Commissioner for Transportation, revealed that the Marine Bridge will be closed for a period of 15 days, starting Saturday, October 11, and reopening on Saturday, October 25, 2025. Osiyemi emphasized that this maintenance is essential, aiming to replace the bridge’s underlying bearings, which play a critical role in maintaining its structural integrity.

To streamline the process and minimize traffic disruption, the maintenance will occur in two phases. Phase I will run from October 11 to 18, focusing on the section of the bridge at the foot of Lawani Oguntayo Road, near UBA, which is inbound to Apapa and Costain. Motorists traveling from Ijora Olopa to Apapa will experience a diversion via the Ijora Causeway Access Ramp, heading towards Ijora 7up and then turning onto the Lilypond Access Ramp.

Following this, Phase II, scheduled for October 19 to 25, will address the stretch between Ijora Badia and the Lilypond Access Ramp. During this phase, motorists from Ijora Olopa to Apapa will be carefully redirected into a contraflow lane, ensuring a smooth transition amidst the construction.

Osiyemi has urged all road users to remain patient and cooperate with the traffic management personnel stationed throughout the area. He reassured the public that adequate traffic officers would be present to manage movement effectively, ensuring minimal congestion during the maintenance phase.

“The temporary closure is essential for the long-term safety and durability of the Marine Bridge,” Osiyemi stated. “This initiative highlights the harmonious collaboration between the Lagos State and Federal Governments to enhance infrastructure while ensuring safer roads for everyone.”

This strategic maintenance will not only prolong the life of the Marine Bridge but will also significantly contribute to the improved safety of the road networks in Lagos, an essential economic hub in Nigeria. As Lagos continues to modernize and develop, such collaborative efforts between various levels of government will play a pivotal role in creating a more resilient infrastructure.

So, if you plan to travel through this area during the closure, make sure to adjust your routes accordingly and allow a little extra time for your journey. The future of Lagos roads looks brighter with these proactive measures in place!
