In an impressive push towards addressing food insecurity, World Vision Zambia has unveiled an ambitious initiative called the ‘Enough Food Campaign.’ This vital project aims to significantly improve the nutritional welfare of over one million children across the country by 2026. Spearheaded by Allan Magasu, the Lunga – Mudanyama Cluster Manager at World Vision, this campaign stands as a beacon of hope in the ongoing battle against hunger and malnutrition in Zambia.

Launched amidst the festivities of World Food Day in Mwinilunga District, located in the picturesque North-Western Province, the campaign seeks to promote sustainable food production and empower local communities. Mr. Magasu articulated a fundamental truth: “We can only end hunger by empowering people with innovations that will enable them to provide food for their families.” This enlightening perspective highlights that solving hunger is not merely about distributing food; it’s about equipping families with the knowledge and tools to sustain themselves.

What’s particularly noteworthy about this initiative is its focus on education. Mr. Magasu emphasized the role of children—those most affected by hunger—by proposing educational programs that teach the importance of growing and consuming local foods. “If we are to end hunger, we need to start teaching children at an early age how to attain food security through agricultural initiatives,” he stated. This approach aims to instill a culture of self-sufficiency and food awareness from a young age.

The campaign closely aligns with the Zambian government’s vision to eradicate hunger by 2030 and enhance food security through sustainable agricultural practices. Provincial Minister Robert Lihefu, represented by Provincial Internal Auditor Mary Mukuka, expressed enthusiasm for the campaign’s timing, especially as it complements the government’s ongoing home-grown school feeding program. “Before the introduction of the project, some learners absconded school due to hunger,” he reflected. However, the school feeding initiative has reportedly boosted learner performance and attendance by providing nutritious meals.

Senior Chief Sailung’a also applauded the campaign, underscoring its significance in combatting hunger and malnutrition in his community. He highlighted the essential role of parents in this mission, urging them to actively participate in cultivating a food-secure environment for their families.

With such a collaborative effort between World Vision, the government, and local leaders, there’s hope on the horizon for Zambia’s children. The ‘Enough Food Campaign’ serves as a proactive approach to tackling hunger, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and fostering a resilient, self-reliant future.
