LUSAKA, Zambia – The vibrant city of Lusaka is hosting the highly anticipated 2025 Digital Government Africa Summit this week, where leaders from across the continent are gathering to spark a digital revolution. Opening the summit on Tuesday, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema delivered an inspiring call to action for African nations, urging them to harness digital platforms as powerful catalysts for economic development.
In his address, President Hichilema, who has made significant strides for Zambia in various sectors, emphasized the pivotal role of digitization in propelling economic growth across Africa. “We need a platform that will accelerate our agenda for growth, for economic expansion, more investment, and trade,” he asserted, highlighting that embracing digital technologies is no longer optional but essential for progress.
The President passionately stated that Africa should not continue to lag behind other continents in technological advancement. He urged all African countries to prioritize digital transformation. “Committing to the digital revolution is paramount for inclusive growth, promoting transparency, and enhancing public service delivery,” he stated, underscoring how technology can democratize access to resources and opportunities.
Echoing Hichilema’s sentiments, Zambian Minister of Technology and Science, Felix Mutati, remarked on how technology serves as a bridge, connecting diverse communities and making daily life simpler. He pointed out that expanded digital connectivity allows even rural communities to engage in transactions that were previously inaccessible, thus promoting inclusivity.
This year’s summit, attended by around 500 delegates from 26 African countries, will delve into critical topics such as digital identity and verification, e-government infrastructure, cybersecurity, data protection, online taxation, and digital payments. These discussions are vital, as they address the backbone of a modern economy: trust, security, and efficiency in digital transactions.
The event not only promises to enhance dialogue among African leaders on digital issues, but it also positions Africa to capitalize on the opportunities offered by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The successful realization of this free trade area is intricately linked to the adoption of digital platforms that facilitate seamless intra-African trade.
As we look towards the future, the 2025 Digital Government Africa Summit stands as a beacon of hope and a platform for transformative ideas, setting the stage for a digitally empowered Africa. With a commitment to harnessing technology, African nations can look forward to a more connected, innovative, and prosperous future.
