The Healing Touch: Dr. Hu Sha and the Legacy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Zimbabwe
When Dr. Hu Sha embarked on her journey from China to Zimbabwe with the 20th China Medical Team, she carried more than just medical supplies; she brought the essence of a time-honored tradition—Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)—and the poignant question of its relevance in a rapidly modernizing world. Her mission was to heal, educate, and connect cultures through wellness.
Dr. Hu’s inspiring journey has resonated deeply, leading her story to be adapted into a short film by students from Hunan University of Chinese Medicine. This film recently won the coveted first prize in the national competition “Telling Chinese Stories Well in English.” A fitting accolade for a doctor whose life exemplifies healing, bravery, and the forging of cross-cultural ties. You can watch the film here.
Facing the unknown in a foreign land, Dr. Hu recalls, “Everything was unfamiliar—the language, the conditions, even the weather. But what struck me most were the eyes of the patients—full of anticipation.” One patient, Kiyo Niso, had suffered a stroke and lost movement in his hand. After just two acupuncture sessions, he joyfully clasped Dr. Hu’s hand and exclaimed, “Chinese magic!”—a small yet powerful victory that transcended language barriers.
As word of her compassionate care spread, Dr. Hu and her teammates established a Traditional Chinese Medicine exhibition room and emergency clinic, transforming curiosity into understanding. Zimbabwean children flocked to learn about herbal remedies, try cupping therapy, and experience acupuncture, all while exchanging smiles with the soft-spoken doctor who had journeyed thousands of miles to uplift their community.
Dr. Hu’s efforts did not go unnoticed. Known endearingly as “Dr. Chipo,” which means “gift” in Shona, she graciously accepted the Republic Excellence Medal in 2024—a prestigious recognition from Zimbabwe for her outstanding contributions. The country’s Minister of Health poignantly remarked, “Dr. Hu brought not only medical skills but also the invaluable friendship of the Chinese people.”
For Dr. Hu, this honor signifies a deeper connection than mere recognition. It evokes the scent of honeysuckle, or rendong, a herb her grandfather traditionally brewed to “clear summer heat.” She beautifully expresses, “That same scent drifted across mountains and seas, reminding me that compassion knows no borders.”
As Dr. Hu continues her mission in Zimbabwe, she stands as a beacon of hope, symbolizing the profound impact of traditional healing practices in modern healthcare. Her legacy will undoubtedly inspire future generations to embrace the healing arts that have interconnected cultures for centuries.
