“Discover How Tunisia is Leading Africa’s Energy Revolution”

Tunisia's Growing Role in Africa's Sustainable Energy Future

As the world’s attention increasingly shifts to sustainable energy solutions, Tunisia emerges as a key player in this essential transition for the African continent. During the recent 21st conference of the Association of African Electricity Companies (ASEA) held in Cairo, Egypt, the spotlight shone brightly on Tunisia’s ambitions in advancing energy sustainability. Notably, Fayçal Trifa, the President and General Director of the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG), represented Tunisia and contributed significantly to the discussions on strategic direction for African electricity companies.

At the conference, Trifa emphasized a crucial evolution in the role of electricity companies. “Utilities are no longer merely technical players responsible for energy production and distribution,” he remarked. “They have become the architects of the energy future.” This evolution hinges on a delicate balance among three pivotal priorities: implementing an ambitious and realistic energy transition, ensuring access to sustainable financing, and maintaining a secure energy supply.

STEG, under Trifa’s guidance, has cultivated both expertise and vision, positioning itself not just as a national entity but as a regional influencer in the energy sector. Collaborating with partners across Africa and the Euro-Mediterranean region, STEG aims to develop modern, resilient, and inclusive energy networks. The sharing of experiences and best practices is vital as the region navigates climate change challenges and technological advancements while seeking funding for major infrastructure projects.

A prime example of this collaborative spirit is the Elmed energy interconnection project. This groundbreaking initiative will link the electricity systems of Europe and Africa through Italy and Tunisia. Spanning 220 kilometers with a capacity of 600 megawatts, this €1 billion project marks a significant milestone, being the first time the European Union has co-financed an energy infrastructure project involving a third country. With a substantial €307 million investment from the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program, alongside backing from major global financial institutions like the World Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the project symbolizes a collective commitment to a sustainable energy future.

The Cairo conference served as an indispensable platform for strengthening cooperation among African nations, with discussions centered on essential topics such as access to green financing, the modernization of electricity grids, and creating robust systems that uphold stability without compromising sustainability goals. The interactions at this strategic forum are bound to ripple across the continent, paving the way for a coordinated and just energy transition.

By taking such proactive steps, Tunisia not only enhances its own energy capability but helps set an inspiring example for other African nations seeking to elevate their energy standards in alignment with global sustainability efforts. As the world moves towards an environmentally conscious future, Tunisia’s advancements in energy infrastructure and regional collaboration could very well lead the way for a greener Africa.
