ECOWAS Celebrates 50 Years: A Look at the Future of West African Integration

As the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) commemorates its 50th anniversary, an exciting gathering is on the horizon. The Amandla Institute for Policy and Leadership Advancement is set to host a significant two-day meeting from October 31 to November 1, 2025, in the bustling city of Abuja. Under the theme “Reimagining West Africa Regional Cooperation and Integration: Alternative Futures,” this event promises to be a hotbed for innovative discussions on the region’s integration journey.

This meeting, taking place at the Main Auditorium of the ECOWAS Commission, will unite a diverse array of stakeholders, including policymakers, scholars, and civil society leaders. This esteemed group is gathering in collaboration with organizations like the African Leadership Centre, CODESRIA (Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa), and WATHI, the West Africa Citizen Think Tank. Together, they’re set to engage in dialogue that could shape the future of the region.

One of the highlights of the event will be the second edition of ‘The African Public Square’ (APS), which focuses on deepening knowledge about African integration. Following the success of its debut in London in early 2023 that explored Africa’s global agency, this edition promises to build on that momentum. The APS provides a unique platform for experts in international development and public policy to assess ECOWAS’ achievements and challenges.

The Paradox of Integration

At the heart of the discussions will be the complex dynamics of regional integration. ECOWAS has made strides like the introduction of the ECOWAS Passport and initiatives for free movement of people, goods, and services. Yet, challenges such as economic disparities, security issues, and the need for more effective policy implementation still persist. Experts will address concerns related to the withdrawal of three member states set for early 2025, underscoring the necessity for fresh, forward-thinking strategies.

Vision 2050 aims to transform ECOWAS from an organization of states to a community of peoples, promoting a more inclusive approach to governance. This ambitious vision underscores the importance of bridging the gap between government initiatives and community-led actions, ensuring that integration is not merely a policy goal but also a tangible reality for all West Africans.

As West Africa celebrates this golden milestone in regional cooperation, the African Public Square stands as a timely platform for reflection and renewed commitment. It’s an opportunity for stakeholders to come together, share ideas, and chart a path towards a more integrated future. Looking ahead, the focus on people-centric policies could pave the way for a thriving, interconnected West Africa.

Stay tuned for updates from this significant event, as stakeholders from across the region gather to inspire a brighter, cooperative future for West Africa!
