Celebrating Compassionate Care: Shelly Peterson Honored with DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing

In a heartfelt ceremony at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington, Shelly Peterson, a dedicated labor and delivery nurse, has been awarded the prestigious DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses by Great River Health Services. This recognition sheds light on the incredible impact nurses can have on patient outcomes, showcasing not just the technical skills but also the profound compassion involved in nursing care.

Peterson’s excellence in nursing was brought to the forefront when she noticed a newborn experiencing distress shortly before discharge. Her keen instinct and swift response were pivotal when the newborn, initially showing some signs of unease, suddenly ceased breathing while being fed by his mother. Fueled by a commitment to her patients’ well-being, Peterson immediately hit the call light and sprang into action. Within moments, she cradled the infant and rushed him to the nursery, calling for assistance from the specialized nursing team.

The team’s response was nothing short of remarkable—the baby was resuscitated and stabilized, later receiving further care at the Stead Family Children’s Hospital. After the incident, the baby’s mother expressed her gratitude through tears, poignantly stating, “Shelly saved my baby’s life.” It’s stories like these that exemplify the vital role nurses play in critical scenarios and the invaluable peace of mind they provide to families.

The DAISY Award is part of a nationwide initiative designed to recognize healthcare professionals who demonstrate exceptional care and commitment. Peterson’s achievement not only highlights her unique contribution but also serves as an inspiration to her colleagues, emphasizing the importance of vigilance, empathy, and swift action in the medical field.

During the award ceremony, attended by patients, family members, and her fellow healthcare colleagues, Peterson was presented with a certificate of commendation, a DAISY Award pin, and a beautifully handcrafted sculpture titled “A Healer’s Touch,” skillfully carved by artists from the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.

Great River Health is home to over 815 skilled nurses dedicated to providing exemplary care across its campuses in Fort Madison and West Burlington, alongside the Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant. The spotlight on Peterson not only uplifts her achievements but also amplifies the mission of the DAISY Foundation, encouraging ongoing recognition and appreciation for nursing excellence across the globe.
