Completing the Accra–Kumasi Expressway: A Smart Move for Ghana’s Infrastructure
Bashiru Ibrahim, the former Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), recently addressed a significant topic during his appearance on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily. His insightful perspective urges the Ghanaian government to consider the completion of the ongoing Accra–Kumasi dualisation project, rather than diverting resources towards an entirely new expressway initiative.
In his remarks, Mr. Ibrahim highlighted the substantial investment already made in the dualisation project, which has seen contributions from successive administrations. Beginning with former President Kufuor’s efforts that started the project from Nsawam to Nkawkaw, and followed up by former President Akufo-Addo’s progression towards Apedwa Junction, the endeavor has consumed notable public funds.
According to Mr. Ibrahim, the current government has made impressive strides, achieving approximately 70% completion on the project, with only 30% remaining. “The intended cost of the entire project is around GH¢8.2 billion,” he added, underscoring the need to ensure this investment yields maximum value for the taxpayers.
He called upon President John Dramani Mahama’s administration to prioritize finishing the last portion of the project. “Completing this part will not only demonstrate prudent financial management but will also greatly benefit commuters who frequently travel on this essential route,” Ibrahim explained. His stance is that commencing a new expressway, which could demand an additional GH¢1.2 billion, would not only be financially questionable but could delay the crucial improvements that travelers desperately need.
The benefits of focusing on the completion of existing infrastructure are clear—by doing so, not only would the government save resources, but it would also enhance the efficiency of one of Ghana’s busiest highways. As Ibrahim noted, investing in the conclusion of the dualisation project will pave the way for safer and smoother travel for countless users, proving that consistency and focus are vital for the development of the nation’s infrastructure.
This perspective emphasizes a potential path forward as Ghana continues to develop its transportation infrastructure while maintaining fiscal responsibility—striking a balance that ensures both economic growth and citizen satisfaction.
