Empowering the Next Generation: NSSEC's Skills Training Initiative for Secondary Students in Abuja
In a significant move towards fostering entrepreneurship among youth, the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC) recently concluded a two-week technical skills training program for 100 secondary school students in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. This enriching initiative, hosted at the Industrial Training Fund, was aimed at providing students with essential skills that are not only marketable but also vital for their personal and professional growth.
The training, which kicked off on August 25, 2025, introduced students to various technical skills, including Plaster of Paris design, tiling, plumbing, painting and decoration, solar panel installation, CCTV installation, catering, culinary skills, and robotics. These diverse skill sets are designed to equip the young learners with the tools necessary to thrive in today’s competitive job market.
Dr. Tim Iyela, the Executive Secretary of NSSEC, underscored the importance of such initiatives during the closing ceremony. Represented by Muhammed Salisu, Director of Teacher Development and Partnerships, Dr. Iyela highlighted that equipping students with entrepreneurial skills early in life lays a strong foundation for innovation and contribution to national development.
“This program not only enhances students’ skills but also aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu,” he said. “By nurturing our students’ potential, we are paving the way for them to become leaders and innovators in their respective fields.”
The NSSEC aims to bridge the gap between traditional education and practical skills, helping students to become more adept at tackling real-world challenges. With one of the key goals being to foster a spirit of entrepreneurship, participants are encouraged to pursue their passions and turn them into viable business ventures.
What’s more, the initiative could pave the way for a new wave of skilled professionals in Nigeria. Given the country’s vast potential for economic growth and development, empowering the younger generation with technical skills is a promising step towards a brighter future.
As Nigeria continues to invest in its youth through such educational programs, the scope for innovation and growth becomes limitless. It’s a hopeful reminder that through education and skill acquisition, the next generation can truly make a difference.
