. In the first half of 2025, coal powered a staggering 81% of the country’s electricity generation. This reliance on a traditional energy source remains a significant aspect of South Africa’s journey towards a diverse and sustainable energy mix.</p>
<p>According to the latest edition of NERSA’s <strong>Report on Monitoring Performance of Renewable Energy Power Plants</strong> (Issue 26), renewable energy sources contributed a modest 8% to the national grid. Though this figure shows a steady commitment to goal-setting, it reflects the challenges ahead as South Africa strives towards a greener future.</p>
<p>Breaking down the report’s data, total electricity generation reached 107 terawatt-hours (TWh) during this period, nudging up from 106 TWh recorded in the same timeframe in 2024. Interestingly, grid-connected renewable energy plants generated 8,285 gigawatt-hours (GWh), which closely mirrors the output from the previous year. </p>
<p>Wind power emerged as the frontrunner within the renewable sector, generating over 5,153 GWh, which constitutes more than 62% of the renewable share. Solar photovoltaics (PV) followed with a respectable 2,407 GWh, showcasing that despite hurdles, solar energy remains a crucial player in the country’s energy mix. Concentrated solar power also played its part, contributing 618 GWh, while other renewable technologies, such as biomass, small hydro, and landfill gas, added smaller but still valuable amounts to the overall generation.</p>
<p>By mid-2025, South Africa had successfully installed 6,618 MW of renewable capacity connected to the grid. This incorporated 94 projects from the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme and three dedicated risk mitigation plants, highlighting the nation’s ongoing commitment toward enhancing its energy infrastructure.</p>
<p>While the data indicates that South Africa may still have a long way to go in achieving its renewable energy targets, the steady progress in the sector shows promise. Acknowledging coal’s role in the ongoing energy landscape while simultaneously investing in renewable sources is a delicate balancing act that South Africa is committed to navigating.</p>
