Urgent Steps to Speed Up Pathology Results in Gauteng: A Commitment to Cancer Care

In a recent address to the Gauteng Legislature, the MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, shed light on a pressing issue impacting cancer care in the province: delays in processing pathology results at the National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS). These results, vital for diagnosing and treating cancer, can determine the course of treatment and, ultimately, save lives.

At the heart of the discussion was the NHLS Histology Laboratory located at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH). As waiting times for pathology results began to rise, healthcare professionals voiced their concerns over how these delays could hinder timely treatment for cancer patients, crucial in a world where every second counts.

However, it’s important to note that while there are challenges, the treatment of cancer patients is ongoing. “Our healthcare specialists are committed to providing the necessary interventions and support,” Nkomo-Ralehoko asserted, reassuring the residents of Gauteng that treatments, including critical radiation oncology services, continue without interruption. Moreover, other pathology laboratories such as the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital remain operational and efficient.

To facilitate improvements, the Gauteng Department of Health convened a special session with medical experts to tackle the issue head-on. They established a dedicated multidisciplinary task team that includes specialists from both the Gauteng Department of Health and NHLS. This collaborative approach aims to prioritize and expedite the resolution of pathology result backlogs primarily at CMJAH and the Steve Biko Academic Hospital.

One of the innovative steps being considered is the establishment of an independent laboratory to process pathology specimens within Gauteng. This not only aims to reduce reliance on NHLS but also enhances internal capabilities, ensuring that patients receive timely and effective care.

MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko emphasized the government’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure. She expressed gratitude for ongoing cooperation with NHLS and various healthcare stakeholders in the pursuit of sustainable solutions.

As Gauteng continues to navigate these challenges, the health department remains dedicated to ensuring that every patient receives the quality care they deserve without unnecessary delays. It’s a promising time for healthcare in the province as innovative strategies are put into place to ensure that the needs of all patients are met efficiently.
