According to an official statement shared on the Lagos State Government’s X account, this initiative will be co-supervised by the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources alongside the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. Currently, Lagos generates an impressive 13,000 to 14,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste each day. A portion of this waste has already been allocated towards successful waste-to-wealth initiatives, along with partnerships with respected entities like a Dutch company and Lafarge for power generation. This ongoing effort demonstrates Lagos’s proactive approach to sustainability.
During a recent strategic meeting held in Alausa with representatives from Siemens Group, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, highlighted the untapped potential of Seattle’s waste. He noted that a significant share of waste remains to be harnessed, opening doors to new and exciting waste-to-energy projects. Among the efforts mentioned during the meeting were the Epe power plant and the material recovery facilities in Ikorodu and Badagry, which aim to alleviate pressure on landfills while expanding renewable energy resources.
Durgen Schumann, the Commercial Director of Siemens Group, expressed confidence in the company’s global expertise in power generation. He reassured stakeholders that this collaboration positions Lagos to effectively tackle waste challenges while simultaneously boosting electricity supply, a vital need for its growing population.
