Morocco Innovates with Floating Solar Panels to Combat Water Loss from Drought-Stricken Dams

Morocco Embraces Innovation with Floating Solar Panels to Combat Drought

Morocco is taking bold steps to harness renewable energy and manage its water resources like never before! As the country navigates its most challenging drought in four decades, it has embarked on an exciting pilot project to test floating solar panels at the Tangier Med dam. This initiative, which began in late 2024, seeks not only to generate clean electricity but also to significantly curb water evaporation, addressing two pressing concerns in one innovative sweep.

The severity of the drought is underscored by the fact that Morocco has experienced record-low rainfall for seven consecutive years. As temperatures rise, particularly between April and September, evaporation rates soar, with current estimates showing that between 3,000 to 7,000 cubic meters of water are lost daily just at Tangier Med. With reservoir levels hovering around 35%, it’s crucial that solutions are found to protect this vital resource. The Ministry of Equipment and Water reports that nearly 1.5 million cubic meters of water evaporate daily — equivalent to over 600 Olympic-sized swimming pools — highlighting the urgency of Morocco’s current situation.

The floating solar panel project aims to tackle this evaporation directly. By covering about 10 hectares of the reservoir with more than 22,000 solar panels, officials expect to reduce evaporation by approximately 30%, thus saving around 1.2 million cubic meters of water each year. This water conservation is significant—it could fulfill about 1% of Tangier’s yearly demand. Additionally, the solar panels are anticipated to generate a remarkable 13 megawatts of electricity, powering the bustling Tangier Med port.

According to Yassine Wahbi, head of water resources planning in the Loukkos basin, the dual benefits of this project—reducing evaporation while generating clean energy—showcases Morocco’s innovative approach to tackling climate challenges. Climate expert Mohamed Said Karrouk calls the initiative “pioneering” but advises that floating panels alone cannot completely solve Morocco’s water crisis. He suggests more investment in transferring surplus water from regions less affected by drought.

Morocco’s ongoing commitment to water management and renewable energy is also evident in its plans to enhance its current waterway systems and explore additional floating solar projects near Marrakech and in the northern regions. With a view toward the future, the country is also focusing on expanding its desalination efforts, aiming to ramp up annual output from 320 million cubic meters today to a staggering 1.7 billion cubic meters by 2030.

As Morocco steps into a new era of innovative solutions for environmental challenges, the world is watching how these initiatives might inspire other nations facing similar issues. Could the Kingdom be paving the way for sustainable development across Africa and beyond? Only time will tell, but one thing is clear: Morocco is leading the charge in the fight against climate change.
