Health Leaders Unite in Lusaka: A New Dawn for African Health

In a significant gathering for the continent, African ministers of health convened in Lusaka, Zambia’s vibrant capital, for the 75th session of the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Committee for Africa. This event, taking place from August 25 to 27, 2025, marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing effort to enhance healthcare systems across the 47 member countries of the WHO African Region. The committee serves as the highest decision-making body regarding health policies and provides a platform for discussing pressing health challenges and endorsing resolutions aimed at improving public health.

Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema opened the session with an inspiring address, emphasizing the lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic. He highlighted the importance of “health diplomacy” in tackling inequalities and urged regional leaders to elevate health as a cornerstone of trade and industrialization. His call for a unified approach to harmonize public health regulations across borders resonated deeply with the ministers, setting a collaborative tone for the discussions ahead.

Minister of Health Dr. Elijah Muchima echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for solidarity and deeper cooperation to effectively tackle the continent’s diverse health challenges. “The complexities of today’s health threats demand that we stand united,” he articulated. “We must deepen regional collaboration, share best practices, harness African expertise and innovation, and build long-term resilience across borders.” These remarks underscore a collective vision towards a more secure, equitable, and sustainable healthcare future for all residents on the continent.

The WHO’s director-general, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, also addressed the committee, highlighting the session’s timely significance as Africa aims for a more sustainable health future. He reiterated WHO’s commitment to working hand-in-hand with African nations to address not only the financial and security hurdles but also to tap into the immense potential that Africa has to offer in terms of health advancements. “Our goal is clear: to support our member states in Africa in their drive to build robust national health systems,” stated Ghebreyesus, linking the continent’s health improvements closely with self-reliance and efficacy.

As the discussions unfold over the next few days, participants are expected to collaborate on a strategic roadmap that aligns health policies with broader social and economic goals, ensuring that health remains a driving force for progress and development across Africa. This session is more than just a meeting; it’s a commitment to establishing a healthier future for generations to come.
