Liebherr Unveils Innovative Trolley System to Revolutionize Operations at Collahuasi Mine!

In an exciting development for the mining industry, Liebherr Mining has made significant strides by successfully launching a state-of-the-art trolley solution at the Collahuasi copper mine in northern Chile. This accomplishment marks a notable milestone in their ambitious strategy to integrate advanced technological solutions in mining operations. The newly commissioned system features four T 284 trucks, each equipped with innovative pantographs, designed to gracefully navigate the mine’s challenging terrain, situated at an impressive altitude of 4,500 meters.

What sets this project apart is not just its scale but the rigorous challenges it faced. The site is prone to high winds and seismic activity, requiring meticulous engineering and robust infrastructure. The complete trolley line spans a precise one-kilometer stretch, showcasing Liebherr’s commitment to delivering sustainable and efficient mining solutions.

Oliver Weiss, the Executive Vice President of Research, Development, Engineering, and Production at Liebherr-Mining Equipment SAS, expressed pride in the successful execution of this project. He noted, “While this is our first full trolley solution delivery, we have extensive experience with trolley technology.” Liebherr has previously supplied a total of 38 trolley trucks in Panama, 15 in Zambia, and 7 in Austria, demonstrating their broad expertise in this crucial field.

A collaborative approach was at the heart of this project. Gonzalo Garcia, Managing Director of Mining at Liebherr Chile, emphasized the importance of pooling global resources to overcome local challenges. While Collahuasi managed the civil works for installation, Liebherr Chile provided specialized guidance on construction and haul road specifications. Components for the trolley system were sourced globally, exemplifying the interconnected nature of today’s mining industry.

And it doesn’t stop there! Liebherr has prioritized ongoing support and training for the Collahuasi team. The local operators are now receiving comprehensive training to ensure they can fully leverage the capabilities of the trolley system, maximizing productivity while maintaining safety standards.

Weiss reflected on the collaboration, stating, “This project exemplifies what is possible through strategic partnerships.” With the trolley solution now operational, Liebherr anticipates expanding its footprint in future projects, demonstrating the potential for growth and new initiatives within the mining sector.
