In an inspiring cultural exchange, celebrated American playwright Lynn Nottage is currently in Zimbabwe, conducting an intensive Re-Write Masterclass tailored for the nation’s emerging playwrights. From July 5 to July 19, 2025, the Zimbabwe German Society in Harare is serving as the vibrant backdrop for this enriching journey into the world of dramatic storytelling.

Nottage, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner known for her poignant plays like Sweat and Ruined, is renowned for her powerful narratives that shed light on the nuances of Black working-class life. Her visit presents a golden opportunity for local talent, as she mentors six promising Zimbabwean playwrights: Amanda Ranganawa (Mutare), Batsirai Chigama (Harare), Kingsley Chinhanu (Mutare), Philani Nyoni (Bulawayo), Rudo Mutangadura (Harare), and Tatenda Mutyambizi (Harare). This masterclass is not only a significant moment for these artists but for the entire Zimbabwean theatre landscape, which continues to thrive and evolve.

The masterclass is made possible through a collaboration between Almasi Collaborative Arts and the Zimbabwe German Society, and it is part of Almasi’s ambitious initiative, Africa Voices Now, a Festival of New African Plays. This festival aims to elevate and globalize African narratives, emphasizing the power of re-writing as a crucial tool in the cultivation of polished theatrical works.

Throughout the two weeks, selected playwrights will engage closely with Nottage, honing their scripts to meet international standards. This innovative approach to script development will culminate in a public showcase scheduled for July 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Zimbabwe German Society. All are welcome to attend this free event, which promises to showcase the richness of Zimbabwe’s theatrical talent.

As the local arts community taps into Nottage’s wealth of experience, this masterclass not only fosters creativity but strengthens the ties between African and global narratives. It’s a testament to the thriving arts scene in Zimbabwe and a reminder of the powerful stories that emerge from this culturally rich country.

So mark your calendars, theatre lovers! This is an exceptional chance to witness the future of Zimbabwean theatre in action.
