In a recent event celebrating World Population Day, Egypt’s Minister of Health and Population, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, emphasized the significance of a multifaceted approach to addressing the country’s population challenges. Rather than focusing solely on demographic figures, he asserted that it’s essential to delve into education, employment opportunities, and active youth engagement. This holistic strategy could be the key to sustainable development in Egypt as it navigates its dynamic demographic landscape.
According to Abdel Ghaffar, Egypt currently sees around 5,378 births daily—almost one every second—which underscores the urgency of demographic issues. He stated, “The human being is the icon of development,” reinforcing that prioritizing human development is fundamental to Egypt’s national agenda. Notably, the Egyptian government has been forming alliances with various UN agencies to champion population health initiatives, signifying a collaborative effort toward healthier communities.
The panel discussion, hosted by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), included prominent figures such as CAPMAS head General Khairat Barakat and UNFPA Representative in Egypt, Yves Sassenrath. General Barakat shared insightful statistics, revealing that Egypt’s population reached an estimated 107.85 million as of mid-2025. While the country celebrates certain advancements, it remains vigilant about higher birth rates, primarily in Upper Egypt.
Further enriching the dialogue was the introduction of the 2025 Egyptian Family Survey, a part of the “Bedaya” initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. This study promises valuable insights into reproductive health, family planning, and unplanned pregnancies, which can inform more effective population policies in the future.
Yves Sassenrath expressed admiration for Egypt’s dedication to achieving its population and development goals, pointing to the notable decline in fertility rates as a commendable sign of progress. He highlighted the critical role of the “Bedaya” initiative in enhancing healthcare services while reiterating that youth empowerment is pivotal for long-term sustainability.
Echoing these sentiments, UN Resident Coordinator Elena Panova remarked on Egypt’s innovative governance reforms and public programs aimed at tackling demographic challenges. She wholeheartedly stated, “Youth remain the most vital partner in shaping Egypt’s future,” emphasizing that the nation’s young population is central to its ambitious growth and development plans.
As Egypt continues to confront its population dynamics, the emphasis on comprehensive strategies that prioritize education, health, and youth engagement will undoubtedly contribute to a more sustainable future. The collaborative efforts between the government and international agencies showcase a united front in addressing these pressing challenges.
