In Lagos, vibrant discussions were held at the closing ceremony of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) 2025 Batch ‘A’ Stream 11 orientation course, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu encouraging participants to actively contribute to the state’s socio-economic and political landscape.
The ceremony, which took place recently, highlighted the Lagos State Government’s commitment to fostering youth engagement and empowerment as a vital part of its developmental strategy.
The NYSC’s Lagos State Coordinator, Mrs. Christiana Salmwang, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for his consistent support of the program. She noted that the welfare of the corps members is a priority and emphasized the importance of the skills they will acquire during their service year.
Addressing the corps members, represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende, the governor stressed the importance of viewing their deployment not just as an obligation, but as an opportunity to make significant contributions to various sectors such as healthcare, education, environmental sustainability, and agriculture.
“Your efforts may not yield immediate visible results, but they will arm you with invaluable experiences for the future,” Governor Sanwo-Olu stated, emphasizing that the Lagos State Government is firmly embedded in promoting youth initiatives.
The governor also encouraged the corps members to take full advantage of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program, which aims to equip them with essential skills that could open doors to funding opportunities and job creation in an economy facing employment challenges.
Mrs. Salmwang elaborated on how the ceremony marks the beginning of the corps members’ transformative journey throughout Lagos State, reinforcing their commitment to contributing positively to their communities.
Out of the 7,887 corps members who completed this first phase, a notable diversity was showcased, with 3,230 males and 4,657 females ready to embark on their service roles. This cohort will specifically engage with local communities, driving initiatives that are paramount for local development.
The governor acknowledged the necessity for strong, grassroots initiatives that enhance community resilience and growth. He urged each corps member to focus on their Community Development Service (CDS) components, emphasizing that they should aim to leave the communities better than they found them.
“Use your time in service to cultivate a spirit of unity and positive social change, especially through responsible use of social media. Promote peace and showcase the positive contributions of Nigerian youth,” Mrs. Salmwang stated, urging corps members to leverage online platforms for good.
The event concluded with the presentation of commendation letters to exceptional corps members and supportive staff, celebrating their dedication and achievements. It’s clear that the NYSC not only seeks to develop individuals but also aims to foster a vibrant community spirit throughout Lagos State.
As the corps members step out into their respective communities, the future of Lagos State shines brighter, nourished by the energy and commitment of its youth. In this ever-evolving landscape, their contributions will undoubtedly shape the region’s prospects for growth and development.
