Madagascar Welcomes Africa's E-Commerce Leaders: A Gathering of Innovation and Collaboration

On May 8, 2024, Antananarivo transformed into a bustling hub for digital innovators as the African Alliance for Electronic Commerce (Aace) held its 15th General Assembly at the elegant Blue Radisson Ambodivona. This significant event attracted e-commerce leaders from various African nations, all eager to share their successes, challenges, and strategies in the fast-evolving realm of electronic commerce.

Madagascar, being a founding member of Aace, proudly hosted this remarkable gathering. Among the notable participants was Gasynet, a key technical partner of Malagasy customs governance, which plays a pivotal role in enhancing digitization efforts throughout the island. Lisiniaina Razafindrakotus, President and CEO of Gasynet, was a prominent voice at the assembly, emphasizing the importance of public-private partnerships in driving Malta’s digital transformation.

Razafindrakotus highlighted the impressive strides Madagascar has made in customs operations, stating, “We have come a long way since 2005-2006. Our customs clearance processes now rival those of Mauritius, with authorization times decreasing dramatically from three weeks to just three days.” This progress is a testament to the nation’s commitment to improving efficiency and streamlining trade, further solidifying its position on the African e-commerce map.

The conference also served as a critical touchpoint for dialogue among participants. Larkana Zafivanona, General Manager of Customs, echoed Razafindrakotus’s sentiments while acknowledging that while significant advancements have been made, opportunities for further growth still exist. The event underscored a collective ambition among the thirty diverse member countries that utilize unique electronic systems to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in e-commerce.

As the digital landscape continually shifts, gatherings like these are vital. They foster collaboration and foster innovation among nations that are serious about enhancing their online commerce ecosystems. Madagascar’s role as a host city not only showcases its dedication to progress but also positions it as a hub for e-commerce innovation in Africa.

With such a productive meeting, the future looks promising for African e-commerce. Countries like Madagascar are making headlines for all the right reasons and setting the stage for an exciting era of digital trade across the continent.
