Lagos Strengthens Child Protection with New Adoption and Guardianship Reforms

In a bold move to further reinforce child welfare and family integrity, the Lagos State Government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to upholding the rights of children, especially in areas concerning adoption, guardianship, and fostering. The state’s approach is rooted in a deep commitment to ensuring that every child is placed in a nurturing and supportive environment—an initiative that resonates with many across Nigeria and beyond.

During a recent stakeholder engagement with judges, magistrates, and social welfare officers, Mr. Mobolaji Abubakre Ogunlende, the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, emphasized that the well-being of children remains at the heart of government policy. Ogunlende was represented by Pharm. (Mrs) Toyin Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, who articulated the fundamental importance of the Child’s Rights Law of Lagos State. This legislation acts as a cornerstone for the state’s various child welfare initiatives, ensuring that they align with both national and international standards.

Ogunlende noted, “Our priority is to ensure every child is nurtured in a safe, loving environment. This aligns with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda, particularly the Social Inclusion Pillar.” His statement captures the essence of the state’s renewed focus—creating a society where every child has the opportunity to thrive.

In a forward-thinking development, Mrs. Saheed Adebambo, the Director of the Adoption Services Department, shared exciting news about the transformation of the Adoption Unit into a full-fledged department. This upgrade reflects the government’s intention to modernize the adoption process—an essential step in ensuring that children are matched with families that can provide for their needs. To facilitate this, the state has begun automating the entire adoption process, allowing prospective parents to navigate the system with ease and complete the process online.

Highlighting the importance of collaboration, the recent meeting aimed to strengthen partnerships between the judiciary and social welfare services, ensuring that child-centered policies are effectively implemented. Adebambo emphasized, “The upbringing of today’s children determines the shape of our future society.” This sentiment resonates strongly with stakeholders, as they aim for a collective effort in improving the lives of children across Lagos State.

As Lagos continues to make strides in protecting and nurturing its younger population, this proactive approach sets a commendable standard for child welfare initiatives across Nigeria and beyond. The collective aim is clear: to foster a safe and loving environment where every child can grow up to reach their full potential.
