Windhoek: A Smart City in the Making

In an exciting development for the capital of Namibia, the City of Windhoek (CoW) has officially partnered with the United Nations Innovation Technology Accelerator for Cities (Unitac). This partnership, unveiled during the April Municipal Council meeting, marks a pivotal move towards Windhoek’s ambition of becoming a smart city by 2027. According to a statement released by the City of Windhoek, this collaboration is set to revolutionize how the city operates, transforming it into a beacon of innovation on both the national and global stages.

The alliance aligns perfectly with Windhoek’s goals to enhance digital integration, boost citizen engagement, and plan smart infrastructure. With the backing of Unitac, the city aims to develop a robust data and digital transformation strategy, ensuring that both residents and city officials can harness the potential of technology to improve everyday life. One of the standout features of this partnership includes the participation in the Reimagine Windhoek Festival, scheduled for May/June 2025. This festival will serve as a unique platform to engage residents and stakeholders in a collaborative visioning process, thereby empowering the community to actively contribute ideas for the city’s future.

Moreover, the collaboration will lead to the establishment of the SmartCoW Interdepartmental Committee, which aims to enhance interdepartmental collaboration through the implementation of digital tools and staff training. This initiative is designed to create a unified approach to smart governance, ultimately benefitting all Windhoek residents. The partnership with Unitac underscores the city’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), enhancing urban technology, and fostering leadership training to navigate the complexities of modern urban living.

In addition to this groundbreaking partnership, the Municipal Council has sanctioned the upgrade of streetlights in Windhoek’s bustling central business district (CBD). This transformative initiative aims to create a vibrant, attractive, and safe environment, which in turn is expected to boost economic activity and enhance community pride. By improving the aesthetics and functionality of the CBD, Windhoek is positioning itself as a city that thrives on social interaction and economic growth.

As Windhoek reinvents itself into a smart city, the collaboration with Unitac paves the way for an inclusive, resilient future. Stay tuned as we follow the journey of how this African capital rises to meet the challenges of urbanization and technology in the coming years.
