Papua New Guinea's Success Story: OTML Achieves Record Revenues

In a remarkable showcase of economic potential, Prime Minister James Marape recently commended Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) for achieving an impressive K1.85 billion in revenue in the first quarter of the year. Following this stellar performance, the mining giant recorded a net profit after tax of K681 million, highlighting the positive impact of local stewardship of resources in Papua New Guinea.

“This exceptional result exemplifies what Papua New Guineans can achieve when given the opportunity to manage our natural resources effectively,” Marape stated during a recent announcement. He emphasized that OTML, being 100% nationally owned, not only reflects the country’s vision for resource nationalism but also illustrates how profits can significantly benefit landowners and contribute to the national budget.

Looking ahead, OTML anticipates generating over K40 billion in benefits over the next 26 years. This not only includes dividends and taxes but also royalties and compensation payments. Prime Minister Marape underscored the critical role these funds will play in bolstering the nation’s infrastructure, stating, “This revenue, and more importantly the profit, will help us build schools, fund hospitals, and drive rural development initiatives.”

The Prime Minister also emphasized the government’s unwavering support for the Community Mine Continuation Agreement review, underscoring the importance of securing a social license for operations that ensure profits continue to flow back to the communities most affected. “Extending the mine should not come at the expense of our environment or the rights of our people,” Marape added, reassured that the current management is elevating environmental and social standards.

In a visionary move, Marape envisions transforming the Tabubil-Kiunga corridor into a diversified economic zone. This initiative aims to foster downstream processing, agriculture, and renewable energy projects, potentially creating numerous job opportunities. “I have directed Kumul Minerals Holdings Limited to explore establishing a new subsidiary that harnesses the capabilities of our own mining professionals,” he mentioned, spotlighting the government’s confidence in local talent.

The Prime Minister proudly stated, “OTML’s performance proves that we can operate our own mining ventures—and excel in doing so.” He also highlighted the importance of the Government’s Connect PNG initiative, which is vital in enhancing business operations and minimizing risks.

With the new road corridor linking Western Papua New Guinea to the Indonesian border expected to be completed by the end of this year, the prospects for continued growth and collaboration in the region are brighter than ever.

As OTML continues to thrive, it sets a powerful example of what can be accomplished when local expertise and resources are prioritized, laying the groundwork for a more sustainable and prosperous future.
