In a heartwarming display of community support, the Solano County Board of Supervisors made waves during their recent Tuesday meeting by honoring the invaluable contributions of childcare providers and recognizing the remarkable achievements of older Americans. This commendation was led by Supervisor Monica Brown, who passionately advocated for both groups that form the backbone of our society.
The meeting revealed a recent proclamation highlighting the impressive network of over 550 licensed childcare professionals and an additional 1,400 license-exempt providers in the county. “Child care plays a crucial role in our local economy and serves as an essential resource during emergencies,” the proclamation states. With a growing demand for childcare that reliably supports families, the need for more providers has never been greater, according to local leaders. Supervisor Brown emphasized that reliable childcare allows parents to work, go to school, and strive for financial independence, which in turn, strengthens the entire community.
Kathy Lago, the executive director of Solano Child and Family Services, took a moment to express her gratitude towards Brown’s commitment. With over three decades of service in a role that supports both families and local businesses, Lago detailed the day-to-day efforts and diverse skills that childcare providers offer. “They aren’t just babysitters,” she highlighted. “They’re small business owners who deserve respect and recognition for their hard work.”
Adding to the conversation, Supervisor Wanda Williams, a former childcare provider herself, shared her experiences and acknowledged the critical role these providers play in educating and nurturing the children in the community. She noted their significance in shaping the thoughts, behaviors, and futures of the next generation.
In addition to honoring childcare providers, the board also recognized May as Older Americans Month in Solano County. Highlighting a growing demographic, over 100,000 residents in the county and an astounding 78 million Americans nationwide are above the age of 60. The proclamation stresses that aging brings opportunities rather than limitations, encouraging older adults to engage, learn, and redefine societal expectations. “Aging is an opportunity, not a limitation,” it reads, promoting an active and stimulating lifestyle among seniors.
Emery Cohen, the Director of Health and Social Services for Solano County, called for tailored services that meet the diverse needs of elderly residents across different cultures and generations. In light of recent changes to Social Security, Supervisor Brown took the initiative to promote legislation aimed at protecting these essential benefits for older Americans.
To round off the meeting on a light-hearted note, Bijan Mirfakhrai was celebrated as Employee of the Month for May. As County Administrator Bill Emlen humorously noted in his absence, “Bijan will still enjoy using the parking space designated for him,” showcasing the spirit of community and recognition among county staff.
As Solano County continues to foster a supportive environment for families and seniors alike, it serves as a shining example of how honoring those who serve the community can lead to a more cohesive and thriving society.
