Lagos Police Confirm Legitimacy of Labourers at Dangote Refinery: A Community Response
Lagos, Nigeria – In a positive turn of events, the Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that a group of 89 men spotted in the Ibeju-Lekki area are legitimate workers hired for the ongoing construction at the Dangote Refinery. This statement comes in response to public concern following reports of their presence in the area.
CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police Public Relations Officer, took to social media platform X to clarify the situation. He explained that these men were carefully recruited from Katsina State by a contractor associated with the refinery project. “Upon receiving reports on May 14, 2025, our officers acted swiftly to verify the situation,” Hundeyin stated, emphasizing the proactive approach of the police to ensure community safety.
After conducting a thorough search of the men, the police found no incriminating items nor engaged in any unlawful activity. Each individual presented valid national identification numbers, which were promptly verified. The contractor responsible for their recruitment also provided documentation to substantiate their legitimacy as employees.
The reassurance didn’t end there. Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Moshood Jimoh, conveyed a message of calm to the public, stating, “The Command remains committed to upholding law and order across Lagos and will continue to respond swiftly to matters affecting public safety.” His remarks underline the dedication of the police department to foster a secure environment as extensive development projects enhance the region’s economy.
This incident reflects the broader importance of safety and transparency in ongoing economic initiatives, particularly those as significant as the Dangote Refinery, which stands as a monumental investment in Nigeria’s energy sector. With its launch, the refinery is poised to contribute significantly to job creation and the country’s self-sufficiency in petroleum products.
As Nigeria continues to evolve, the collaboration between law enforcement and community interests will remain crucial in navigating the complexities of economic growth and maintaining public confidence.
