Enhancing Healthcare: Mfantseman MP Advocates for Strategic Use of Hospital Funds

In a dynamic push for improved healthcare in Ghana, Dr. Ebenezer Prince Arhin, the Member of Parliament for Mfantseman, has urged the management of the Ho Teaching Hospital to enhance its financial independence by capitalizing on its Internally Generated Funds (IGF). His remarks came during a recent nationwide assessment by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, which aimed to evaluate health facilities across the country and explore innovative solutions for common challenges.

Dr. Arhin emphasized the importance of thinking beyond traditional government support and looking toward effective strategies to utilize IGF. He pointed out the successful examples set by other hospitals that have managed to leverage their funds for crucial equipment and infrastructure, indicating that the Ho Teaching Hospital could adopt similar practices. “The success we’ve witnessed in other hospitals can absolutely be replicated here,” he noted confidently.

During the committee’s visit, insights were shared about the infrastructure challenges that Ho Teaching Hospital faces. Dr. Simon Dzokoto, the Director for Research, Policy Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation, painted a clear picture of the financial constraints, explaining that much of the IGF generated is typically allocated to repay borrowed resources, leaving limited funds available for further development. This issue is significant as it hinders the ability of the facility to improve and expand its services.

In response, members of the committee encouraged the hospital’s management to look at successful strategies employed by other facilities, such as the Koforidua Regional Hospital, famous for effectively integrating public-private partnerships (PPPs) into their operational model. Such collaborations could serve as a valuable avenue for addressing productivity and infrastructure deficits.

The tour covered several critical health institutions, providing a broad perspective on the country’s healthcare landscape. The legislative team included prominent MPs like Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey (Keta), Alexander Akwasi Acquah (Akim Oda), Dr. Thomas Winsum Anabah (Garu), and Hottordze Roosevelt Alexander (Central Tongu), indicating a concerted effort across political lines to elevate healthcare standards in Ghana.

As they continue their tour of various hospitals, it’s clear that the insights gained will play a crucial role in shaping future healthcare policies aimed at fostering efficiency and sustainability within Ghana’s health sector.
