The ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is a significant milestone for many Nigerian students aspiring to further their education. However, recent observations by the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Examination Bodies bring to light some areas where improvements are needed. During a monitoring operation in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), committee chairman Oboku Oforji and his team identified the lack of essential amenities that could enhance the exam-taking experience for students.
At various centers such as Model Junior Secondary School Maitama and SASCON International School Maitama, the committee noted a concerning absence of well-ventilated exam halls, air conditioning systems, and even first aid services for potential emergencies. Some candidates faced uncomfortable conditions, with overcrowded rooms causing them to fan themselves to cope with the heat. Oforji emphasized, “It’s vital that we provide an optimal environment for our candidates to perform their best in these crucial examinations.”
Despite these challenges, the students’ determination was abundantly clear. Oforji praised their resilience, stating, “You can see the zeal and commitment in our children. In spite of the uncomfortable conditions, their will to succeed is commendable.” He expressed confidence in the future, believing that these young minds represent hope for Nigeria, despite the challenges the country currently faces. “We are very proud of them and their commitment,” he added.
Moreover, the committee plans to address issues raised by students regarding registration glitches and multiple payments during an upcoming stakeholder meeting with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). Oforji reaffirmed that they are dedicated to advocating for the necessary changes that will improve the quality, safety, and integrity of future UTME examinations.
The collective effort to uplift Nigeria’s educational standards is palpable, with the committee aiming to provide actionable recommendations. As they work diligently on behalf of the students, the narrative surrounding the UTME is transforming into one of proactive change and positive reinforcement.
