A Heartwarming Ceremony: New Citizens Celebrate British Identity in Liverpool

In a vibrant ceremony at St George’s Hall in Liverpool, fifty individuals from across the globe officially became British citizens on St. George’s Day, an event filled with joy, pride, and personal reflections. Deputy Lieutenant for Merseyside, Liam Hanlon, represented King Charles at this meaningful occasion, evoking the rich tapestry of Liverpool’s welcoming spirit.

Among the new citizens was Mohamed Wurie, a 40-year-old from Sierra Leone, who found an emotional connection to the Liverpool FC anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” “That lyric encapsulates my journey to citizenship,” he shared, expressing his deep appreciation for the city that has become his home since he moved to the UK in 2015 to pursue his studies in law. He boldly asserted his new identity: “I consider myself to be a Scouser.”

Wurie, alongside other new citizens like 45-year-old Angelika Kwidzinska from Poland, who has embraced life in Liverpool for over 15 years, demonstrated the multicultural fabric of the city. Kwidzinska expressed her gratitude at becoming a citizen on such a symbolic day, highlighting the joys of living in a port city like Liverpool with its rich maritime heritage, similar to her hometown of Gdansk.

Mr. Hanlon shared a poignant family history, recalling his own status as a third-generation Irish immigrant and the tales of community warmth his grandfather relayed about their initial days in Liverpool. “This ceremony is another continuing part of that story,” he remarked, showcasing the city’s longstanding tradition of hospitality and inclusiveness.

The event also celebrated the journeys of others, such as Alma Partington from the Philippines, who thanked the lovely people of Liverpool for their friendly demeanor and expressed her happiness in joining the ranks of British citizens.

Councillor Laura Robertson-Collins echoed this sentiment, affirming Liverpool’s essence as a city that embraces and celebrates diversity. “This is what Liverpool is all about,” she said, underlining the city’s legacy of warmth throughout generations.

This heartfelt ceremony didn’t just represent a legal transition; it highlighted a powerful sense of community and belonging, enshrining the importance of shared values and friendship in an ever-connected world.

As Liverpool continues to welcome individuals from all corners of the globe, events like these not only enrich the city’s cultural landscape but also foster unity and understanding—reminding us all that no one has to walk this journey alone.
