Celebrate Earth Day: A Commitment to Sustainability at City Lodge Hotels

Today, as the world observes Earth Day, the focus is on unity in protecting our planet and taking meaningful steps toward sustainability. This year’s impactful theme, “Our power, our planet,” shines a light on the importance of harnessing clean, renewable energy. At the forefront of this movement is City Lodge Hotels, a pioneer in sustainable hospitality practices that are designed to inspire both guests and the wider community.

City Lodge Hotels has taken bold strides toward environmental responsibility with a signature initiative known as the Hydration Station. This innovative concept provides guests with complimentary access to unlimited, filtered magnesium-rich water. By encouraging visitors to refill and reuse their water bottles, the Hydration Station effectively diminishes the need for single-use plastic bottles, thus prioritizing the health of our planet alongside guest comfort. This small but impactful change aligns beautifully with the overarching goals of Earth Day.

The filtration units offered at these stations, engineered by Best Water Technology (BWT), transform municipal water through a patented magnesium technology. This not only enhances the taste of the water but also promotes health benefits, as magnesium is known to support various bodily functions. Each unit can purify an impressive 30 to 40 liters of water an hour, conveniently located near reception areas for easy access. Guests can grab a stylish reusable bottle or simply fill their own, making hydration both sustainable and convenient.

In a bid to enhance guest experience, City Lodge Hotels is adding elegant glass water carafes to guest rooms across its properties. This new offering, designed to be reusable and easy to clean, complements the hydration efforts initiated in the common areas and eliminates the reliance on bottled water in rooms. Lindiwe Sangweni-Siddo, the Chief Operating Officer, emphasizes the importance of creating a culture of sustainability through these small yet impactful choices. “Our initiative reflects the growing demand for eco-conscious travel options,” she notes, “and we are committed to continuous improvement in our sustainable practices to align with the values of responsible travelers.”

The sustainability initiatives at City Lodge Hotels extend beyond water conservation. Did you know that 41 of their 58 hotels harness solar energy? This commitment plays a significant role in reducing the overall carbon footprint. Further statistics reveal impressive water and energy efficiency metrics, enhancing their responsible approach to resource management. For instance, water usage is down to 0.34 kl per occupied room and electricity consumption remains at 19.5 kWh per occupied room.

Additionally, City Lodge Hotels have introduced eco-friendly bathroom amenities housed in trays made from 100% recycled Tetra Pak cartons, smartly diverting waste from landfills. They have also made a commitment to using cage-free eggs across all locations, showcasing a holistic approach to sustainability.

As we celebrate the 55th anniversary of Earth Day, the artwork of renowned artist Alexis Rockman, which features a hopeful image of a solar panel rising above a crowd, encapsulates our unified journey toward a cleaner, greener future.

By choosing City Lodge Hotels, travelers can indulge in a guilt-free stay that aligns with sustainable values. Together, we can turn the tide on plastic pollution and embrace greener choices, ensuring a healthier planet for generations to come.

Join the movement for a sustainable future, and let’s make every day Earth Day!
