In a vibrant show of support for entrepreneurship and economic empowerment, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, unveiled a pivotal initiative aimed at uplifting low-income residents across the state. At the esteemed Micro Enterprise Support Initiative (MESI) event held at the Blue Roof, Ikeja, Governor Sanwo-Olu announced the remarkable investment of over N8.4 billion in the past four years, benefiting more than 12,000 aspiring entrepreneurs.
This year’s MESI edition, a brainchild of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), is geared towards combating poverty through practical support, providing resources, skills training, and startup capital. Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed his commitment to fostering a Lagos that empowers everyone, stating, “I envision a city where every woman, youth, and potential entrepreneur can turn their visions into successful enterprises.”
The event saw over 1,700 individuals, who have recently undergone vocational training, receive a range of crucial empowerment packages. From sewing machines to agricultural tools and cash grants of N100,000, these resources are designed to jumpstart small businesses and promote sustainable livelihoods. The governor emphasized that this program is not just about giving out materials—it’s a transformative journey towards long-term economic growth.
Governor Sanwo-Olu firmly believes, “When you empower one entrepreneur, you strengthen an entire family.” His administration’s focus is on creating an economy where opportunities are abundant, fostering an environment where entrepreneurship can flourish.
The First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, echoed the governor’s sentiments, highlighting the significant impact of WAPA’s initiatives in reducing economic disparities. “This initiative has truly transformed lives. It addresses pressing inequalities that we confront in Lagos,” she shared.
Hon. Bolaji Cecilia Dada, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, pointed out that MESI is an essential component of the state’s strategy to eradicate poverty. Describing the initiative as crucial, she said, “We are translating policy into tangible outcomes. When the government pledges to leave no one behind, this is what it shows.”
As the new beneficiaries stood proudly, they expressed immense gratitude for the support received, pledging to utilize the tools and funding wisely. Many called for continued investment in such schemes, underscoring their transformative potential.
Governor Sanwo-Olu concluded the event with an inspiring message, urging recipients to not only focus on their growth but also to leverage their success to uplift others, stating, “Let this be the start of something significant… Reach back and lift someone else up.”
This initiative marks a critical step towards building a resilient economy in Lagos, where everyone has the chance to thrive. Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration is clearly committed to empowering communities and nurturing a robust entrepreneurial spirit throughout the region.
