EU Delegation Explores Bwana Mkubwa Station: A Step Toward Enhanced Rail Infrastructure in Zambia

In an exciting development for Zambia’s railway sector, a significant delegation from the European Union (EU) recently visited Bwana Mkubwa Station in Ndola. Accompanied by the Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) Managing Director, Cuthbert Malindi, the team explored the station’s infrastructure and assessed its operational challenges. This visit marks a crucial step in the potential strengthening of Zambia’s railway network, highlighting cooperation between Zambia and European partners.

The EU delegation, spearheaded by Henrik Hololei, the INTPA Hors Class Advisor, aimed to gain insight into the current status of railway infrastructure at Bwana Mkubwa Station. With 15 railway sidings, it poses a vital hub within Zambia’s extensive rail network. During the tour, Mr. Malindi emphasized the station’s strategic importance to national and regional transport, adding that the insights garnered from this visit will guide future investments.

As Zambia continues to work on improving its transport infrastructure, the possibility of EU financing for track upgrades reflects an optimistic outlook for enhancing railway efficiency. This collaboration aligns with ZRL’s Strategic Business Plan, positioning Zambia as a pivotal connector in southern Africa’s logistics and trade routes.

Edwin Choonga, ZRL’s Regional Manager for Northern and Intermine, echoed this positive sentiment, welcoming the EU’s involvement in assessing and addressing the station’s needs. He described the delegation’s visit as more than just a routine inspection; it was an opportunity for both parties to engage in constructive dialogue that could lead to tangible improvements in railway operations.

The delegation included notable EU officials such as Claudio Bacigalupi, Head of Cooperation, and Juan Fernandez, Programme Manager for Infrastructure, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of the station’s operational framework. Their presence underscores the EU’s commitment to supporting Zambia’s infrastructure development, paving the way for a brighter future.

As discussions are set to continue between the EU and ZRL, the anticipation for progress grows. This collaboration could set a precedent for future partnerships aimed at boosting Zambia’s transportation infrastructure, ultimately enhancing connectivity across the region.
