Dabaa Nuclear Plant: Set to Become the World’s Largest Powerhouse by 2030!

Egypt’s Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant: A Milestone in Global Nuclear Energy

In an exciting development for Egypt and the world of energy, Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev recently announced that the Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is set to become the largest nuclear construction project globally by its projected completion date in 2030. Speaking at the AtomSkills professional skills tournament in Yekaterinburg, Likhachev emphasized the significance of this ambitious project, stating that it stands out not just for its size, but also for its remarkable potential in advancing energy solutions across Africa and beyond.

“This is the biggest construction site in Africa and an unprecedented nuclear project, with four units currently underway simultaneously. Additionally, the site has the potential to double its capacity,” Likhachev said, highlighting the impressive scale of the initiative. The plant, located in the Matrouh governorate of northwestern Egypt, represents a monumental investment in the country’s energy infrastructure and sustainability efforts.

As the construction moves forward, the workforce on the Dabaa project is expected to swell, with projections indicating an increase from 25,000 to around 40,000 workers within the next year. This surge is indicative of the project’s expansive nature and its important role in creating local job opportunities. Notably, the project showcases significant local participation, with Egyptian companies handling the majority of the construction work, further strengthening the country’s economy and skilled workforce.

Likhachev also confirmed that all four nuclear units, each boasting a capacity of 1,200 MW, are progressing according to schedule, with the first reactor vessel installation anticipated in November. The projects utilize advanced VVER-1200 water-water reactors, recognized for their safety and efficiency, meeting top international standards. These reactors are already operational at several plants in Russia and Belarus, showcasing their reliability and advanced technology.

This pivotal project marks Egypt’s first foray into nuclear energy, something that has been in the works since 2015 when the Nuclear Power Plants Authority of Egypt and Rosatom first partnered on the Dabaa initiative. Once completed, the Dabaa NPP is projected to generate approximately 37 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, which will fulfill around 10% of Egypt’s total energy requirements, making it a cornerstone of Egypt’s energy strategy.

With expectations set for 30% completion by 2025, the Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant is not merely a local or national project—it embodies Egypt’s commitment to modernizing its energy landscape while contributing to a more sustainable future. The world watches with anticipation as this monumental project unfolds, heralding a new era of energy development in Africa.
