Teraco Powers Ahead with Wind Energy Partnership in South Africa
In an exciting move towards sustainable energy, Teraco, one of southern Africa’s leading providers of interconnection platforms and vendor-neutral colocation data centres, has signed a pivotal power purchase agreement (PPA) with the South African integrated energy aggregator, NOA. This important collaboration will enable Teraco’s data centres to harness the power of wind energy, adding a significant boost to its renewable energy initiatives.
Teraco has already made strides in green energy, having revealed late last year that it commenced construction on a cutting-edge 120MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant located in the Free State. Now with this new PPA, Teraco aims to supplement its existing solar program with wind power, thereby providing a flexible and robust energy portfolio that adapts to the growing demand for renewable energy.
What makes this partnership particularly exciting is the synergy between wind and solar energy in South Africa. While solar power is generated during the sunny hours of the day, wind energy has the unique ability to generate power through the night and into the early morning. This complimentary dynamic provides a comprehensive energy solution, ensuring a more stable and reliable renewable energy supply for Teraco’s operations.
As part of the agreement, NOA will facilitate the transfer of renewable energy produced from various wind projects directly to Teraco’s data centres. The renewable energy that flows through this collaboration will not only enhance the efficiency of Teraco’s solar program but also maximize the overall renewable energy output across its data centres.
The first phase of this renewable energy initiative is projected to kick off in 2026, with incremental improvements anticipated as the project evolves. By leveraging the existing electrical grid, this “wheeling” process will allow power generated in remote, high-energy yield areas to be distributed efficiently to urban centres, marking a significant advancement in South Africa’s renewable energy landscape.
As the world increasingly turns towards sustainable practices, Teraco’s commitment to renewable energy exemplifies a forward-thinking approach in the tech and energy sectors. This partnership with NOA is a testament to the innovative strategies being employed to address energy demands while simultaneously championing environmental sustainability.
Stay tuned for more updates as Teraco continues to pave the way for energy innovation in South Africa and beyond.
