Unpacking the Changes for Themba Masuku: A Shift in Role and Benefits
By Musa Mdluli
In a significant turn of events, newly appointed Shiselweni Regional Administrator (RA) Themba Masuku finds himself facing substantial changes in his financial benefits following his new role. Previously holding the esteemed position of Deputy Prime Minister (DPM), Masuku was entitled to a lucrative package that included a substantial lifetime monthly salary, generous medical aid, and a variety of state benefits. This altogether amounted to an impressive R100,000 per month, highlighting the perks that come with high-ranking government roles.
For those keeping score, that translates to an annual figure exceeding R1.2 million while not fulfilling an active role in government. However, with his recent appointment as the Shiselweni RA, Masuku is slated to lose out on these gains—totaling more than R5 million over the next five years. Instead, he will receive a monthly salary of R70,000 without the added benefits of escort services and other perks.
The decision to adjust Masuku’s benefits aligns with a specific provision in the government’s circular regarding his lifetime salary and benefits. It clearly states that upon appointment to a new government position, such as the one Masuku has assumed, the previous benefits would be forfeited. This clause is not uncommon in governmental frameworks, outlining a transferable but ultimately limited set of perks tied to the specific roles individuals occupy.
On a positive note, during a recent meeting with Tinkhundla Minister Sikhumbuzo Dlamini, Masuku was seen alongside other regional administrators, including Lubombo’s Themba Msibi, Hhohho’s Princess Tsandzile, and Manzini’s Chief Prince Gija. Such gatherings reflect the collaborative spirit within the government, showcasing a united front focused on regional development and public service.
While change can often be challenging, it also presents opportunities for growth and adaptation. The role of an RA can be pivotal in bringing about positive changes in the community, directly impacting the lives of citizens in the Shiselweni region. With a fresh perspective and commitment to serving the public, Masuku may well navigate this new chapter successfully.
As we watch this transition unfold, it serves as a reminder of how public service can evolve and adapt in response to changing roles within government. Only time will reveal the full extent of Masuku’s impact in Shiselweni, but one thing is certain: each position carries its own set of responsibilities, challenges, and rewards.
