Jem HR Secures .3M Funding Boost to Fuel Growth and Innovate Product Development!

South African Startup Jem HR Secures ZAR 60 Million to Revolutionize HR for Deskless Workers

In a significant development for the tech-driven HR landscape in South Africa, startup Jem HR has successfully closed a pre-Series A funding round amounting to ZAR 60 million (approximately US.3 million). This fresh influx of capital will accelerate Jem’s growth and enhance its innovative product offerings, further solidifying its position as a leader in employee benefits and HR solutions.

Founded in 2019 under the name SmartWage, Jem HR underwent a rebranding in 2022 to better reflect its mission of empowering frontline employees. At its core, the platform allows companies to provide their workforce with immediate access to earned wages, promoting financial stability and well-being for employees who typically operate without traditional office setups.

Jem HR has created a comprehensive WhatsApp-based solution, enabling deskless workers to manage their employment-related tasks seamlessly. Employees can receive company updates, check their payslips, request leave, and tap into financial wellness offerings—all through the convenience of a messaging app that many are already familiar with. This user-friendly approach not only saves time and resources for companies but also enhances the overall employee experience.

The recent funding round saw equity investment led by Next176, a subsidiary of Old Mutual, alongside a ZAR 30 million private debt facility. This financial backing is set to propel Jem HR’s expansion plans beyond Southern Africa, allowing them to enhance their platform’s features and introduce new services aimed at addressing the specific needs of deskless employees.

Simon Ellis, co-founder and CEO of Jem HR, expressed the significance of this funding, stating, “This funding is a pivotal step in enabling us to achieve our dual mission: to make managing and connecting frontline employees effortless while providing them with money-saving financial benefits.” He noted that strong demand for their platform stems from the unique challenges faced by deskless workers, including low wages and limited access to resources.

The company is also looking to implement new products that will improve the lives of these employees, such as savings tools, low-cost insurance, credit score support, and even a financial wellness helpline. These initiatives will contribute significantly to enhancing the quality of life for workers who often face transportation issues and safety concerns.

Tramayne Monaghan, chief venture officer at Next176, lauded the vision of Jem HR, stating, “We invest in businesses that deliver sustainable, disruptive growth, and Jem is a prime example. We are excited to support their bold vision as they scale their innovative solutions across Africa and beyond.”

As Jem HR prepares to expand its footprint, it stands as a beacon of innovation, proposing that tech-driven solutions can significantly improve workplace dynamics and employee satisfaction across the continent. With the support of forward-thinking investors, the future looks bright for Jem HR and the deskless workforce it serves.
