Major Water Infrastructure Project Launched in Namibia to Address Growing Needs
In an exciting development for the residents of Rundu and its surrounding communities, NamWater, in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB), has undertaken the Rundu Water Treatment Plant Extension project. This ambitious initiative, valued at approximately N5 million, aims to meet the increasing water demands of the region while ensuring a sustainable water supply for the future.
Rundu, located in Namibia’s Kavango East Region, has faced significant challenges related to water supply, largely due to dated water abstraction and conveyance systems that have struggled to keep pace with the community’s needs. Coupled with issues in water distribution infrastructure, these challenges have led to frequent supply interruptions that have affected residents and local businesses alike.
A firm commitment to resolving these issues was voiced by Minister of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform Calle Schlettwein, who reiterated the government’s dedication to ensuring water security for all Namibians. “Access to water is a fundamental right. This project demonstrates our dedication to closing the gap and ensuring a sustainable water supply for everyone. It also highlights the importance of accountability in water payments to support NamWater’s operations,” he stated.
The ambitious project will consist of several essential upgrades, including a new raw water abstraction and conveyance system, modernization of the existing water treatment facility, improvements to current infrastructure, and the decommissioning of outdated systems. Additionally, enhanced stormwater and sewer systems will be incorporated, ensuring proper drainage and sanitation.
Abraham Nehemia, CEO of NamWater, expressed the broader benefits of this initiative, emphasizing its potential to stimulate economic development and improve living conditions. “By providing reliable and high-quality water, we are not just addressing current needs but also laying the groundwork for sustainable economic growth,” he remarked.
Governor of the Kavango East Region, Bonifatius Wakudumo, added another layer of importance to the project, calling it a beacon of hope for the community.
