In 2024, China’s wind power sector has hit a remarkable high, contributing significantly to both its own green energy transition and that of foreign markets. According to a recent report by the China Wind Energy Association, the country has added a staggering 14,388 wind turbines across its mainland this year alone, bringing its total installed wind power capacity to an impressive 86.99 million kilowatts. This represents a 9.6% increase compared to the previous year, indicating a robust expansion in renewable energy resources.
What’s particularly exciting is the ripple effect of this growth on the global stage. As China continues to refine its wind energy technologies, it’s exporting its innovations to a host of countries, particularly in emerging economies. In 2024, China shipped 904 wind turbines to 23 different nations, with a total capacity of 5,193.7 MW—a notable increase of 41.7% from 2023. Notably, the top recipients included Saudi Arabia (15%), Uzbekistan (13.1%), Brazil (12.5%), Egypt (10%), and Kazakhstan (7.2%). These figures underscore not just China’s commitment to renewable energy, but also its role as a leader in providing sustainable solutions worldwide.
As the year progressed, the total number of wind turbines exported reached 5,799, equating to a massive capacity of 20,787.8 MW and encompassing 57 countries across six continents, adding three new territories: Azerbaijan, South Korea, and Indonesia. Interestingly, the cumulative top export destinations have been Vietnam (14.8%), Australia (9.6%), Uzbekistan (8.2%), Kazakhstan (5.6%), and South Africa (5.5%).
Moreover, China’s offshore wind technology is also making waves, with turbines being sent to Vietnam, Italy, and Japan by the end of 2024. Not only is this a testament to China’s growing capabilities in the wind sector, but it also highlights the increasing global demand for clean energy solutions.
Looking ahead, China is steadfast in its journey towards reaching carbon neutrality. The government’s focus includes expediting the construction of renewable energy bases in diverse landscapes such as deserts and wilderness areas, as well as further developing offshore wind capabilities. This commitment was highlighted in the Government Work Report delivered during the ongoing “two sessions,” showcasing the country’s dedication to a sustainable future.
As nations around the world strive for greener energy solutions, China’s proactive role in the wind power industry places it at the forefront of the renewable energy revolution. It’s an exciting time for renewable energy, and we can expect to see even more ambitious projects and collaborative efforts emerging from this global leader.
