Major Milestone for Lagos: Lekki-Epe International Airport Takes Off! 🌍✈️
In a significant move for the city that never sleeps, the Lagos State Government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has signed a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Summa Group, a renowned international construction company. This partnership heralds the much-anticipated development of the Lekki-Epe International Airport, a project that promises to transform travel and trade in Lagos.
Governor Sanwo-Olu proudly announced this exciting agreement on Saturday through a post on X, underscoring its enormous potential to boost connectivity, stimulate economic growth, and invite global investments into Lagos, Nigeria’s bustling economic hub.
“We signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the internationally acclaimed construction company, Summa Group, to develop and construct the much-awaited Lekki-Epe International Airport,” the Governor expressed. He further emphasized that this innovative initiative is a central part of the state’s aspirations to enhance transportation infrastructure and create new opportunities for both residents and businesses in the area.
The vision for Lekki-Epe International Airport was first unveiled on October 7, 2022, with plans to establish the airport on a sprawling 3,500 hectares of prime land in the Lekki-Epe corridor. This strategic location is expected to significantly streamline travel for both residents and international tourists and open up new avenues for trade.
Jubril Gawat, the Governor’s Senior Special Assistant on New Media, shared that the ambitious project is set to kick off in 2023. With the master plan and aeronautical designs already in place, Gawat confirmed that studies are currently underway to explore various funding strategies and tackle key considerations before the project is officially launched.
Designed to accommodate a staggering five million passengers annually, the Lekki-Epe International Airport will be developed through a public-private partnership model, engaging both local and foreign investors. This collaborative approach is expected to ensure the project is not only economically viable but also beneficial for the local community.
As of January 25, 2024, Governor Sanwo-Olu reiterated that the state is in the final stages of preparation for the project’s groundbreaking, with necessary federal approvals currently under consideration. This project is a shining example of the proactive measures being taken in Lagos to enhance infrastructure and prepare the city for a brighter, more connected future.
Stay tuned as we follow the developments of this transformative project that promises to bring unprecedented opportunities to Lagos and beyond!
