In a significant leap forward for Lagos State, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu recently announced that phase two of the Adiyan Water Works is on track for completion within the next 10 to 12 months. This ambitious project is set to enhance the state’s water supply capacity remarkably by delivering an impressive 70 million gallons of clean water daily.

During a site visit where he was joined by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed his satisfaction with the project’s progress, noting that it is currently 80% complete. “We remain committed to fulfilling our promise of providing Lagosians with better access to potable water,” he announced, underscoring his administration’s commitment to improving residents’ quality of life.

The need for a reliable water supply in Lagos cannot be overstated, considering the city’s rapid population growth and urbanization. Access to clean water not only addresses health and hygiene concerns but also fosters economic development by enhancing productivity in the community. Residents of Lagos, who often grapple with water shortages, stand to benefit dramatically from the project, which promises to alleviate some of these pressing challenges.

Governor Sanwo-Olu didn’t stop at just water supply; he also emphasized the state government’s plans to enhance the Independent Power Project (IPP) in Akute. This initiative is crucial for providing a consistent power supply to the waterworks, ensuring it operates efficiently once fully operational. This multifaceted approach demonstrates a comprehensive strategy to elevate Lagos’s infrastructure.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, echoed the governor’s sentiments, highlighting the ongoing efforts to bolster water infrastructure in the region. He reiterated that ensuring residents have access to adequate pipe-borne water is a top priority for the administration.

Moreover, Mukhtaar Tijani, General Manager of the Lagos State Water Corporation, expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration in prioritizing the Adiyan project. He gave assurances that the remaining construction tasks would be completed promptly, further cementing the state’s commitment to addressing water scarcity.

Originally launched in 2012, the Adiyan Water Works project has been a focal point for meeting the water needs of Lagos’s growing population. Once completed, it will not only reduce water supply challenges but also act as a catalyst for improving the socio-economic conditions of millions of residents across the state. This project marks a pivotal milestone in Lagos’s journey toward sustainable urban living.
