Eritrea Hosts 2nd Congress of Public Health Professionals Association Amid Emphasis on Capacity Building

Asmara, January 31, 2025 – The vibrant city of Asmara played host to the Public Health Professionals Association of Eritrea on January 30, as it celebrated its 2nd congress, a significant assembly for health professionals dedicated to advancing public health in the region. The congress, originally slated to occur biennially, faced delays due to the global challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, marking this gathering as especially meaningful.

Dr. Zerebruk Tesfamariam, the association’s president, highlighted the resilience and adaptability of the members as they moved forward with their important work. The gathering brought together approximately 300 members since the association’s formation in 2017, all focused on enhancing health standards within Eritrea and beyond.

During the congress, participants reviewed progress reports covering both financial matters and training initiatives aimed at bolstering members’ skills. The array of discussions allowed stakeholders to engage in meaningful dialogue about the trajectory of public health practices in Eritrea. Among the recommendations put forth were plans to establish forums designed for ongoing discussion on pressing health issues, a push for increased research output, and strategic activities to enhance the association’s financial sustainability.

Moreover, the assembly underscored a commitment to develop sustainable training programs that empower healthcare professionals. Such initiatives resonate well with Eritrea’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its healthcare infrastructure and services. The event concluded with the election of a new executive committee tasked with leading the organization for the next two years, reflecting a renewed commitment to collaborative governance.
