Top Candidates Announced for South Whidbey School Superintendent Role

Exciting Times Ahead: South Whidbey School District Narrows Down Superintendent Search to Three Candidates

The South Whidbey School District is buzzing with anticipation as the search for a new superintendent has reached an exciting milestone. After 14 dedicated years of leadership by Superintendent Jo Moccia, who will officially retire at the end of the 2024-25 school year, the district has announced the finalists for her successor. This news comes after a special board meeting held Wednesday evening, where three impressive candidates were identified.

In an effort to ensure community engagement and transparency, the South Whidbey community will have the opportunity to meet the finalists at a community forum scheduled for January 15 from 6:00 PM to 8:25 PM. The event will take place in-person at the South Whidbey Elementary School Board Room, located at 5380 Maxwelton Road in Langley. For those unable to attend in person, a Zoom option will be available, allowing everyone to participate in this important step for the district’s future.

Board President Brook Willeford expressed confidence in the candidates, stating they are proven leaders with extensive experience in supporting both students and staff. Each finalist has demonstrated a commitment to building meaningful community partnerships and maintaining fiscal responsibility, key elements that will guide the district into a new chapter.

The first finalist, Liz Ritz, hails from Whidbey Island and has served as the director of teaching and learning at Oak Harbor School District since 2019. Ritz holds a doctorate in educational leadership and administration from Washington State University and has an impressive track record, including roles as a curriculum and technology coach and an elementary school principal.

Next up is Becky Clifford, who has been making waves as the Assistant Superintendent of the Anacortes School District for the past three years. Clifford’s impressive credentials include a doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies from the University of Washington and over 20 years of experience in diverse roles within education. Her commitment to inclusivity and innovation is evident from her previous positions, including leadership roles in special education.

The final candidate, Kristine Michael, currently serves as the superintendent of Northridge Local School District in Ohio. Under her stewardship, the district achieved a noteworthy 4.5-star state rating, highlighting her ability to drive results in student success and engagement. Michael has also built a strong record of achievement in curriculum innovations and metrics that improve student outcomes, including reducing chronic absenteeism during her tenure.

As South Whidbey prepares for this new era of educational leadership, the community eagerly anticipates their potential leader’s vision and strategies. This transition represents not just a new face for the district but an opportunity for fresh ideas and continued commitment to quality education.

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting journey, and be sure to attend the community forum to voice your thoughts and questions!
