Khenifra Launches an Unforgettable Short Story Festival!

The vibrant city of Khenifra, Morocco, is currently alive with the sounds of creativity and cultural exchange, as it plays host to the tenth session of the International Short Story Festival. Organized by the Al-Ansar Cultural Association in collaboration with the Center for Semiotics Research and Cultural Studies, this year’s festival opened its doors on December 29th, drawing in literary enthusiasts from around the globe to celebrate storytelling under the theme “Identity and Self in Arab Narrative.”

The festival, which is backed by the Ministry of Culture, has become an annual staple in Morocco’s rich tapestry of cultural events. It serves as a meeting point for literary and artistic minds, encouraging dialogue and showcasing the dynamic cultural scene prevalent in Khenifra. The remarkable opening ceremony featured a documentary depicting the journey of esteemed storyteller Muhammad Al-Atros, alongside the announcement of winners for the short story competition named after the celebrated storyteller Rabia Abdel Kamel, and the poetry competition linked to the poet Qassem Lubay.

Attendees were treated to a series of fascinating activities, including a deep dive into the narrative experiences of Muhammad Al-Atros through discussions and story readings. Local and national authors contributed their voices, further enriching the festival atmosphere. The regional director of culture for Beni Mellal-Khenifra, Lahcen Charfi, emphasized the significant role Khenifra plays in Moroccan culture, noting its historical and intellectual contributions to literature and the arts.

Adding an international flair to the proceedings, Salouha Enobli, a cultural activist from Tunisia, highlighted the importance of cultural bonds shared between Tunisia and Morocco, aiming to strengthen ties through participation in such events.

This year’s program isn’t just about celebrating established authors; it also aims to inspire the next generation of storytellers. Workshops for students, storytelling activities aimed at children, a doll-making workshop, and performances by local artists are all on the agenda. The festival promises an engaging exhibition showcasing artistic creations alongside literary works.

As the festival progresses, attendees can look forward to a grand finale that will include the recognition of participants and the distribution of certificates honoring contributions to both local heritage and the broader Arab cultural landscape. The Khenifra International Short Story Festival stands as a testament to the enduring power of storytelling, fostering connections across cultures and generations.
