Supporting South Africa's Matriculants: A Call to Mental Wellness

As the anticipation builds for the release of matric results on January 14, a wave of emotion sweeps through South Africa. For many learners, this milestone represents a culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and late-night study sessions. Yet, it can also be a source of significant stress and anxiety. To help navigate this challenging period, the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) is stepping up with invaluable support for students, parents, and caregivers alike.

The organisation understands that the stakes are high. Matric results are not just numbers; they can influence future educational and career opportunities. This reality can lead to various feelings, from excitement and hope to anxiety and dread. SADAG is committed to ensuring that students know they are not alone during this critical time and that support is readily available.

One of the key initiatives by SADAG is its upcoming Facebook Live event on January 10 at 13:00, featuring counselling psychologist Dylan Benyon. This session, titled “Matric Results and Mental Wellness – A Guide for Students and Parents,” will provide essential tips for fostering mental wellness as results are released. It’s a fantastic opportunity for parents and students to learn how to communicate effectively about emotions and expectations, making the journey smoother.

In addition to the Facebook Live session, SADAG is hosting three other informative Instagram Live sessions throughout the week of January 13. These sessions are designed to offer guidance, practical advice, and support to help matriculants feel more equipped to handle the aftermath of their results. Moreover, for those seeking ongoing support, SADAG’s weekly Matric Support Group has resumed, offering a safe space to share feelings and receive encouragement.

SADAG is dedicated to fostering mental wellness across South Africa, reminding everyone that it’s okay to feel overwhelmed and that help is just a click away. To join the matric support group and gain access to these resources, visit this registration link.

This proactive approach from SADAG not only highlights the importance of mental health but also encourages a supportive community to stand firm behind our matriculants. As students gear up for their results, they can find solace in knowing that a network of support is ready to help them every step of the way.
