Artists Gear Up to Celebrate Their 50th Anniversary in Style!

In an exciting initiative to invigorate the spirit of Port Moresby, a dynamic group of painters, known as the Kamillon Art Krew, has embarked on an ambitious project to transform an 862-meter-long fence along Ela Beach into a vibrant canvas of creativity. This colorful endeavor is set to add a festive touch to the city in honor of Papua New Guinea’s upcoming Golden Jubilee celebrations, a milestone event that marks the nation’s rich history and cultural heritage.

The project, coordinated by Peter Elavare, is not just about beautifying the landscape; it also aims to tell the stories of Papua New Guinea’s past, present, and future through art. “We were told to put up designs that will reflect the past, present, and future of Papua New Guinea,” Elavare shared. The artwork will feature faces and symbols representative of the country’s 22 provinces, with a signature touch of gold to signify pride and unity.

As excitement builds, the team anticipates completing this vibrant fence within just 50 days. The Kamillon Art Krew was invited to take part in this initiative by the Chinese Harbour Engineering Company and the National Capital District’s Governor, Powes Parkop, who is committed to enhancing the city’s aesthetic appeal.

Despite aiming to involve over 40 young artists in the project, initial turnout was modest, with only 15 participants showing up on the first day. However, with a funding boost of K50,000 allocated for this creative venture, the team is optimistic about rallying more involvement as the project progresses.

Following the completion of the fence, the Kamillon Art Krew is set to tackle another high-profile project: repainting the Sir Hubert Murray Stadium, further enriching the cultural landscape of Port Moresby.

This initiative not only showcases the talent of local artists but also fosters a sense of community pride and engagement, reflecting a collective effort to celebrate Papua New Guinea’s extraordinary journey.
