First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo Brings Joy to Wiaboman with New Basic School
By Lydia Kukua Asamoah
In an inspiring display of commitment to education and community development, First Lady Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo recently inaugurated a new basic school in Wiaboman, located in the Weija-Gbawe Constituency of Greater Accra. This initiative, carried out through her Rebecca Foundation, is set to revolutionize education for local children who, until now, faced significant obstacles just to attend primary school.
Before this project, students in Wiaboman had to trek long distances to reach schools in neighbouring areas like Mamprobi, Dansoman, Glefe, or Weija. This journey not only consumed valuable time but also exposed the children to potential road dangers. Recognizing this challenge, the community’s chiefs and residents reached out to Mrs. Akufo-Addo during her visit in 2020, seeking her assistance to establish a local primary school that would bring education closer to home.
During the inauguration, the First Lady passionately articulated her vision of accessible education for every child. “Education is the foundational bedrock for our children’s futures, and I am dedicated to ensuring that every child in our community has the opportunity to thrive,” she remarked. Her commitment to not only erecting educational institutions but also enhancing health facilities underlines the Rebecca Foundation’s mission to improve the lives of vulnerable groups, particularly women and children.
Mrs. Akufo-Addo also highlighted the government’s dedication to education, noting the significance of the free senior high school policy that allows all Junior High School graduates to transition into secondary education without financial barriers. With the upcoming elections on December 7, she urged constituents to support the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, whom she described as a visionary leader dedicated to solving the challenges facing Ghanaians.
The event was further marked by expressions of gratitude from local leaders. Mr. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the NPP parliamentary candidate for the area, thanked Mrs. Akufo-Addo for her unwavering support, echoing how the new school adds to the comprehensive development agenda of the NPP, which has already included improvements in electricity, water supply, and health facilities.
As the community of Wiaboman celebrates this monumental achievement, it’s clear that the newly erected school stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and the determination of community members to create a better future for their children. This initiative not only serves as a beacon of hope in Wiaboman but also sets a profound example for other regions aiming to enhance educational accessibility.
In a vibrant call to action, local elder Nii Oboja Nunoo expressed deep appreciation, stating, “Today, the First Lady has made it a dream come true for us.” It’s evident that this project will leave a lasting impact on the community and help shape the futures of many children for generations to come.
