Helping Hands: Building Homes for the Disabled in Zimbabwe

In an inspiring turn of events, the Nemufaro Disabled Care Centre in Zimbabwe is rallying for support as they take a significant step toward improving the living conditions of their members. Co-founder Linda Chilungu recently shared her vision on how their organization plans to construct homes for people with disabilities, highlighting the urgent need for decent housing in their community.

The Harare City Council has allocated 50 residential stands in the Donnybrook area of Tafara, a tremendous opportunity for the Centre’s members. Each stand measures approximately 200 square meters, offering hope for future residents who long for safe and secure homes. However, the Centre is now on the lookout for partners and support to turn this vision into reality.

Chilungu, a dedicated mother of a child with disabilities, emphasizes the importance of empowering her community. “These individuals have pressing needs,” she states. “They require assistance to build homes that are not only safe but also conducive to their well-being.” It’s a call that resonates with many families who currently face challenges related to multi-disability situations and employment instability, which often hinder their ability to create a secure environment.

While some families have made progress, managing to construct modest two-roomed houses, the quality of these structures often falls short, raising concerns about durability and safety. “We need to ensure that the homes we build meet quality standards,” Chilungu notes. The Centre is seeking support from well-wishers and organizations committed to improving the living standards of people with disabilities.

Beyond housing, the Nemufaro Disabled Care Centre aims to empower individuals through vocational training and skills development. “We are also eager for project opportunities that enhance income-generation,” shares Chilungu. With a renewed focus on job creation, the Centre hopes to provide sustainable solutions that will help families thrive.

The Centre, although registered only recently, has been active in providing valuable services. They offer vocational training tailored to various disabilities and have partnered with Deaf Zimbabwe to offer sign language training for the families of deaf individuals. This multifaceted approach ensures that not only families affected by disabilities are supported but also that they are equipped with skills to improve their livelihoods.

As they embark on this ambitious initiative, the Nemufaro Disabled Care Centre stands as a beacon of hope for many. With community support and collaboration, they can help build a brighter future for people living with disabilities in Zimbabwe.
