Namibia Kicks Off Ogongo–Oshakati Pipeline Replacement Project: A Leap Towards Sustainable Water Access
In a significant stride towards enhancing water security in Namibia, Agriculture, Water and Land Reform Minister Calle Schlettwein recently inaugurated the groundbreaking ceremony for the much-anticipated Ogongo–Oshakati Pipeline Replacement Project. With an investment of N5.7 million, this initiative aims to bolster the water supply system, especially in rural areas, ensuring that every citizen has access to reliable and safe water.
During the ceremony, Minister Schlettwein highlighted the government’s unwavering commitment to prioritizing water infrastructure investments. “The groundbreaking of the Ogongo–Oshakati Pipeline Project marks a significant milestone in our efforts to secure access to quality water for every citizen,” he stated. This project aligns with various key frameworks such as the Sustainable Development Goals and Namibia’s Vision 2030, which emphasize the critical role of water security in driving socio-economic transformation and promoting inclusivity.

NamWater Chief Executive Officer Abraham Nehemia also spoke on the strategic necessity for this replacement. The existing pipeline, a robust structure built in the 1970s, has served its purpose commendably but has now reached the end of its operational lifespan. This aging infrastructure has led to inefficiencies in delivering potable water to Oshakati and its surrounding communities, highlighting the urgent need for modernization.
“This project is not merely about replacing old pipes; it represents a strategic intervention to meet the growing water demands fueled by urbanization and population growth in Oshakati and adjacent areas,” Nehemia elaborated. The pipeline will address these challenges, ensuring that residents in the Oshana and Omusati regions enjoy robust and reliable water services.
