Uzbekistan Takes Major Step Towards WTO Membership with Successful Negotiations in China
In a significant announcement for trade and economic relations, Uzbekistan has successfully wrapped up its bilateral negotiations with China regarding its accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO). Azizbek Urunov, the special representative of the President of Uzbekistan on WTO matters, proudly shared this development on his LinkedIn page, marking a pivotal moment in Uzbekistan’s journey towards enhanced global trade integration.
The Uzbek delegation’s visit to Beijing was not just a formality; it was a fruitful exchange that underscored the growing economic partnership between Uzbekistan and one of the world’s largest economies. Urunov extended his appreciation to the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China and specifically to Deputy Minister Li Fei and Director Li Defeng for their collaborative spirit, emphasizing that successful negotiations have laid the groundwork for future economic cooperation.
“This year marks the completion of an important phase — negotiations with two of the world’s largest trade players, the United States and China,” Urunov commented. This achievement is particularly noteworthy as it demonstrates Uzbekistan’s proactive approach in positioning itself within the global trade landscape. With 22 countries already engaged in bilateral negotiations and ongoing discussions with several others, Uzbekistan is rapidly moving toward its ambitious goal of WTO membership.
Earlier this month, Uzbekistan also completed bilateral negotiations with the United States, indicating a strategic alignment with major global economic powers. The country aims to finalize its membership before the 14th Ministerial Conference, set to take place in Cameroon in 2026.
The World Bank predicts that Uzbekistan’s accession to the WTO could boost its economic growth by 17% within 5-7 years of joining. This prospect promises to attract foreign investment, enhance job creation, and ultimately improve the standard of living for its citizens.
As Uzbekistan continues to embrace these transformative steps on the global stage, the future looks bright for this Central Asian republic. The successful conclusion of negotiations with major trading nations marks a proactive strategy to integrate into the global market, positioning Uzbekistan as a rising player in international trade.
