In a remarkable development for South Africa’s educational landscape, the Ikusasa Student Financial Aid Programme Foundation NPC (Isfap) has reported an unprecedented surge in applications for student funding. A staggering 70,000 applications have poured in for the 2025 academic year, marking the highest number in the foundation’s history. Among these, 60,000 aspiring scholars are seeking support for their undergraduate studies, while the remaining 10,000 applicants are focused on advancing their education through postgraduate programs.
Werner Abrahams, the CEO of Isfap, expressed pride in this significant milestone, noting that the overwhelming response reflects a growing awareness among students about the vital role Isfap plays in their educational journey. “This is the biggest volume of applications that we have received to date. To us, this proves that a growing number of aspiring, as well as enrolled students, see Isfap as a partner that can help them achieve their future goals and build a better life for themselves and their families,” Abrahams stated.
Recognizing the increased demand for bursaries, Isfap has also called for potential partners, particularly private organizations, to join their mission. “We want to extend an invitation to private organisations who can offer funding to help meet this need,” he urged. The focus here is not merely on financial assistance, but on fostering partnerships that will ultimately enhance the educational landscape in South Africa.
The foundation is particularly centered on bridging the skills gap in South Africa’s economy by funding higher education in critical fields such as actuarial science, engineering, medicine, nursing, computer science, and chartered accountancy. Interestingly, Isfap primarily targets the ‘missing middle’ students—those from households with incomes ranging from R350,000 to R600,000 annually—alongside supporting unfunded students who qualify for assistance without compromising on academic excellence.
Furthermore, Isfap’s initiatives go beyond just academics. The program also offers mental health support, life skills training, and financial literacy programs, ensuring that students are well-equipped to navigate the challenges of university life. Since its inception in the wake of the #FeesMustFall movement, Isfap has positively impacted over 3,600 students by covering tuition fees, accommodation, books, laptops, and even stipends, ensuring a holistic educational experience.
